ECO4 is the latest phase of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), a government-backed initiative that has been helping UK households since 2013. This scheme offers qualifying homeowners and private tenants the chance to replace inefficient heating systems entirely free of charge, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria.
It improves on earlier schemes. ECO4 aims to focus on homes with the lowest energy efficiency, ensuring they meet improved energy standards. The priority is to bring properties with poor Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings (E-G) up to at least a D rating, making them warmer and more energy efficient.
From January 2023, the ECO4 scheme has been exclusively targeting the least energy-efficient homes, delivering significant upgrades and benefits. For those who qualify, the scheme offers greater support than ever before. Some households received full energy upgrades worth over £30,000, leading to potential savings of up to 70% on their annual energy bills!

How Do I Qualify for ECO4?
1. For Homeowners and Tenants on Benefits
If you're a homeowner or renting privately and receive an income-related benefit, you could be eligible for ECO4. This support is aimed at properties with an EPC rating of E, F, or G—typically those with the most room for improvement in energy efficiency.
2. Landlords of Eligible Tenants
Landlords, do your tenants receive qualifying benefits? If so, they may be eligible for ECO4 grants to improve the property’s energy efficiency. These upgrades could significantly reduce their energy bills and add value to your property at no extra cost to you.
3. Local Authority Flexibility (LA FLEX)
Thanks to our partnerships with select local authorities across Scotland, homeowners—regardless of benefit status—can access the ECO4 scheme through the 'Flexible Eligibility' pathway. This means even if you're not on benefits, there may still be a route to get support for energy efficiency improvements.
